Colin Smith attended St Bees School with a scholarship from Mr Moore's Prepartory School, Harrogate, in 1912. He was a good gymnast and was one of the four to win the Challenge Cup for his House in 1914. He joined the Artists' Rifles, and later volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps, and obtained his commission.
