C Smith was accidentally killed on March 11, 1917, by the fall of his aeroplane at an aerodrome in Lincolnshire. He was using a scout machine, and had completed one circuit, reaching a height of about 1000 feet, when he switched off to land. Apparently he forgot to put on the 'right rudder' which is necessary to counteract the twist of the aeroplane, and it spun to the left, and got out of control. When at a height of about 400 feet the machine suddenly dived to the ground.
