Joe was five foot two inches tall. He led many barbed-wire parties out into No Man's Land. He was accused of casting away arms after wedging his non-functioning rifle across a narrow trench to slow down advancing Germans after an ambush which killed his CO. He reached his comrades in the rear while shouting "The Hun are upon us".
