Bertie was wounded five times but still kept getting sent back to the front. In 1914 in the Dardanelles a bullet to the face broke his jaw and went through his neck and another lodged in his shoulder. In 1916 he received shrapnel wounds all over. In 1917 more shrapnell wounds and invalided to England. Back to France on Good Friday and in April 1918 he was wounded in both legs and slightly gassed. This time he did not survive his wounds. He had suffered so much.
