Fred's family ran an ironmonger's shop on the corner of Church Street, where he worked as a youngster. Later he was a saleman for a company in London. He enlisted as soon as he could and died aged 18 in Cochester where his Regiment was based. He was brought back to the village by rail and there was a funeral with military honours at St. Helens.
