At St Bees School W S Glegg was a prominent member of the Football XV for two or three years. He came to St Bees with his two elder brothers in 1909 and left in 1915. He became School Prefect, Head of Grindal House and. Captain of the XV, and was also sergeant in the OTC. Perhaps he will be remembered best by his feat of running the motor road-roller at night-time down the hill behind the School House., in defiance of all the laws to the contrary. He obtained a commission in the 9th King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1915., and was sent out to France. During an attack on a German trench on September 15, 1916, he was slightly wounded in the leg and started back to the dressing station; from then there was no trace of him - he must have been killed by a shell on his way back.
