William originally joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1896. He took part in putting down the Boxer Rebellion and was awarded the China Medal. He was discharged in 1902 married and had a daughter. When war was declared he reenlisted in the Marines and was present at the siege of Antwerp where he was slightly wounded. He then took part in the Galliopl campaign where he appears to have contracted disease and died in Cairo on August 18th 1915 aged 37.
