Alfred was a nurseryman and an active member of the Gustard Wood Minstrels. He joined the Beds Regiment in January 1915, received a head wound which was treated in France. Sent back to England to be treated for a liver infection. In 1917was back in France and was wounded by a gas shell which affected his eyes badly. He was killed on May 8th 1918 near Ypres but his body was not discovered until March 1920,identified from a scrap of his pay book. He was buried close by.
