Leslie Gunson went to St Bees School from 1907 to 1913 winning the Dixon cup for shooting in 1912. After leaving school he began studying the medical profession, at Edinburgh, but on the outbreak of the war he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, and was at the Front for about eighteen months. He was in the great push of July 1, 1916, and was killed on the 18th. On his own suggestion he had gone out to the front line of trenches to search for his two telephonists, who had been missing for twenty-four hours. He was unable to find them, and as he was returning to his battery he was killed by a machine-gun bullet.
