William joined the Wiltshire Regiment after leaving Marlborough College in 1914. He was going to go to Pembroke College, Cambridge, but chose to join up just after war was declared. First the 5th Wiltshire Regiment, then the 6th Wiltshire Regiment. After training, he went to France in July 1915. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of Loos on the 25th September 1915, aged just 20 years old.
