William Carroll was born on 18 February 1884 in Shettleston Glasgow. He was the son of Margaret Carroll. He had joined the Army Reserves in 1902 and was called up in August 1914 and mobilized to Aberdeen. In 1913 he had married Elizabeth McNeil while he was a ploughman and she was a farm servant. They had a daughter Mary born 28th May 1914. her birth being registered in Shettleston. He was made a prisoner of war in September 1914 and died of peritonitis.
