Harry Colley was the son of John and Sarah and prior to enlistment was employed as a miner. He died in action on his 35th birthday. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in November 1916 for conspicuous gallantry in action (this has been donated to the Royal Engineers Museum at Chatham). He worked at rescue operations under heavy fire in full view of the enemy, saving the lives of three men who were buried under debris. Harry Colley left behind a widow Alice and five small children. They lived on Lawn Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.
