Excerpt from the War Diary of the 10th South Wales Borderers; Tuesday July 2nd, 1918. Battalion in reserve at FORCEVILLE, together with the remainder of the brigade. The day was spent in cleaning up and usual inspections held - the remainder of the day the men had a rest. They are billeted in trenches immediately outside village - the Company H.Q. being located in tents and houses nearby. A tragedy occurred at our rear H.Q. at LEALVILLERS early in the morning of the 2nd July. The H.Q. was shelled and direct hits were obtained on the house where H.Q. were located - with the result that 2 officers & 8 O R were killed & 2 officers and 8 O R wounded. The names of the officers were - Capt. A.J. Evans & Capt. W.L.G. Foster - Killed and Lt. E.A. Travis & Lt. & QMR. M. Whitworth - wounded. Casualties. 2 off. 8 O R Killed 2 off. 8 O.R. wounded
