Born December 1891, Newport, Mon. Son of Jack and Anne Hopkins. Joined 2nd Batt RWF in 1911. Wounded and posted to 16th Batt RWF on return to the front line. Promoted to Sergeant on 10th September 1918. KIA on 18th September 1918 during Battle of Haucourt/Loos. In 1914 our Grandmother, Jessie Riggs, was In Service in Dorchester - there was an Army Camp at Poundbury, close by........ Herbert's Brother, William Henry, 2nd Batt South Wales Borderers was KIA on 13th September 1914 in China and his name is on the Sai Wan Memorial.
