Remembering Old Applebian Douglas Alexander MacKay Shepherd, Rifleman 6029 1st/6th London Regiment, the Queen's Westminster Rifles.
Douglas was born in Carlisle in 1890, the son of Canon William & Mary Elizabeth Shepherd. As a young man he lived in Appleby at The Vicarage, his father being the clergyman at St Lawrence.
Douglas attended Appleby School. Upon his father's death in 1910, the family moved to Carlisle, at this time Douglas was attending Queen's College, Oxford.
He was killed in action 19th September 1916 near Angle Wood Valley at The Somme age 25. 

Douglas is buried at Combles Cemetery.
