Completing my research into my Clay family, I realised that my mother did not know her paternal Grandfather or any of his siblings so I investigated. Thomas Edward Clay was the son of Edward and Ann Clay, born 18 June 1881 in Willenhall, West Mids. He married Fanny Huston, 20 January 1907 and they had one son - John Edward, my Grandfather. He appears to have enlisted with the 4th BN South Staffs Regt in 1901 and then the 2nd BN South Staffs Regt in 1914. His death is recorded as 18 May 1915 and he is remembered at the Le Touret Memorial. From what I have found at this time the SStaffs were fighting the 2nd Ypres during the period 22 April 1915 to 25 May 1915. His photograph is taken from The Workers Union - Roll of Honour and is the only picture we have of him.

Thomas had 2 sisters and 6 brothers one of whom, FrederickWilliam and was killed in action 30 September 1916
