Private John (Jack) HALL (1888-1917).

Service # 6/245; 1914-1915 : Private, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, New Zealand Expeditionary Forces (NZEF) & 1917: Private, Wellington Infantry Regiment NZEF.

World War 1 Service :

1) 1914-1915: Served at Gallipoli (ANZAC), Turkey as a Private, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, Main Body, NZEF.

2) 1917: Served France & Belgium as a Private, Wellington Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, 28th Reinforcements, NZEF.

Jack was the son of Mrs H. Hall - of Marton, Rangitikei Region, North Island, New Zealand.

Prior to enlistment for war service Jack Hall was a Grocer's Assistant - at Marton.

Jack Hall enlisted for war service on 15 August 1914 - at Nelson, South Island, New Zealand. He was 25 years of age.

At enlistment Jack Hall was posted as a Private with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, Main Body, NZEF.

Private Jack Hall embarked from New Zealand for overseas war service twice.

1) 16 October 1914 - with the Main  Body NZEF - aboard HMNZ T11 "Athenic" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.

2) 24 July 1917 -  with the 28th Reinforcements NZEF - aboard HMNZ T89 "Waitemata" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.

On 16 October 1914 - on his first embarkation for overseas war service Private Hall left the Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand - with the Main Body NZEF - aboard HMNZ T11 "Athenic".

Six weeks later - on 3 December 1914 - Private Hall disembarked from his transport ship from New Zealand at Suez, Egypt.

From Egypt Private Hall was sent to serve at the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey - on 12 April 1915.

Private Hall was at the main landing of the ANZAC (Australian & New Zealand Army Corps) troops at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli, Turkey - on 25 April 1915.

Private Hall served at Gallipoli, with the ANZAC Forces, from 25 April 1915 to 18 August 1915.

On 18 August 1915 Private Hall was admitted, sick, to the HM Hospital Ship "Ulysses" - at Gallipoli. Private Hall was medically evacuated, from Gallipoli, to Egypt,  aboard this hospital ship.

On 25 August 1915 Private Hall was admitted to the New Zealand General Hospital - at Cairo, Egypt.

One month later - on 23 September 1915 - Private Hall was invalided back to New Zealand aboard HM Transport "Tofua".

On 14 February 1916 -  Private Hall was discharged, from further war service with the NZEF - as being "medically unfit".

In 1917 Private Jack Hall re-enlisted for war service with the NZEF. At enlistment he was posted as a Private with the Wellington Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion NZEF.

On 24 July 1917 Private Hall left New Zealand, again, for overseas war service - aboard HMNZ T89 "Waitemata" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.

Private Hall disembarked from his transport ship from New Zealand - on 24 September 1917 - at Plymouth, England.

One month later - on 24 October 1917 - Private Hall left England for active war service - at France & Belgium.

On 8 November 1917 Private Hall joined his Battalion - the 1st Battalion of the Wellington Infantry Regiment NZEF - in the field, at Belgium.

Three weeks later - on 1 December 1917 - Private John (Jack) J. Hall was killed in action, in the field - at Ypres, Belgium.

Private John J. Hall is commemorated on the Buttes New British Cemetery (New Zealand) Memorial, Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Private John J. Hall is also remembered at his hometown in New Zealand - on the Brightwater District War Memorial (1914-1918) - at Brightwater, Nelson Region, South Island, New Zealand.
