George was the second child in a family of eight children, who were born at two-year intervals between 1892 and 1906. The children were: Joseph Arthur (1892), George (1894), Charles Wilfrid (1896), James Clarence (1898), Jessie (14.02.1900), Dorothy (1902),William Henry (1904) and Sydney (25.10.1906). Sister Jessie called her first son George in his memory. The family home at 7 Suffolk Street, Oxbridge, Stockton-on-Tees (then in Co. Durham, but now part of Teesside) was a small terraced house which is still there. George's father, Charles Edward Glew (born 1869), was a monumental mason. His mother was Hannah Marie Glew (nee Middleton), (born 1872, died 9.11.1953). George would have attended the nearby Oxbridge School (which is still the local school) until he was 12, the normal school leaving age at that time. He would have then gone out to work, at that age no doubt as an unskilled manual labourer. His family was poor and so his wages would have been a useful addition to their income. My father, Sydney Glew, was the eighth child, and he did not marry until 1944. Therefore, when I was born in 1946, it was already 30 years since George had died, and it was also after another World War. I am so sorry I was never able to meet my Uncle George.
