My grand-uncle Michael Brien, born Arklow, Co. Wicklow , Ireland, was serving on board the merchant ship, the S.S. Astoria, on route from New York to Arkangel, when it was torpedoed and sunk by German UBoat 46 in the Barents Sea on the 9th October 1916. 17 men were lost including Michael who has been remembered by the family through the generations. We remember him especially this year on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death.. May he rest in peace.
