Prior to enlistment Edward Evans was a Fruit Preserver - at Brightwater, Nelson Region, South Island, New Zealand.
Edward Evans enlisted for war service - on 15 December 1914 - at Trentham Military Training Camp, Wellington District, North Island, New Zealand. On 20 December 1914 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
At enlistment date Edward Evans was 38 years of age.
On 26 March 1915 Sgt Evans left New Zealand for overseas war service - with the 3rd Reinforcements NZEF - aboard HMNZT 17 "Maunganui" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.
Sgt Evans disembarked, from his transport ship from New Zealand - on 26 March 1915 - at Suez, Egypt.
Soon after arriving at Egypt Sgt Evans embarked, again, from the Port of Alexandria, Egypt for - active war service at - Gallipoli, Turkey.
Sgt Evans served at Gallipoli until 10 May 1915 when he was severely wounded in action. He was medically evacuated, from Gallipoli, aboard Hospital Ship HS "Ulysses" to Alexandria, Egypt.
On 14 May 1915 Sgt Evans was admitted to the No 5 General Hospital - at Alexandria, Egypt.
On 28 May 1915 Sgt Evans was listed as "dangerously ill" - at No 5 General Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt.
Sergeant Edward D. Evans died of wounds, received in action at Gallipoli - on 30 May 1915 - at the No 5 General Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt.
Sergeant Evans is buried at the Alexandria (Chatby) Military & War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt (Grave ref: L.143).
Sergeant Edward D. Evans is also remembered at his hometown in New Zealand - on the Brightwater District War Memorial (1914-1918) - at Brightwater, Nelson Region, South Island, New Zealand.
