My great uncle Arthur Ernest Sadler was born in Walgrave, Northamptonshire. As an army reservist, in April 1913 Arthur applied for permission to join the rest of his family and reside in Canada. He married Beatrice on 19th February 1914 in Wentwoth, Ontario. On August 9th 1914 he was ordered to report at Quebec for re-enlistment in the British Army. Soon after arriving to fight in the trenches in France and Flanders, it was discovered that he was losing his eyesight. He was 'invalided' to India where he continued to serve, now with the Norfolk Regiment. He ultimately returned to England in a 'Sick Convoy' on 3rd January 1919. On his return he contracted Influenza during the epidemic. By the time of his death from pneumonia and heart failure he was almost blind. His records show that his injuries from gas attacks in France contributed to his death. He died at 16.45 on 19th February 1919, at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill, London, reportedly with his family in attendance. He left a widow Beatrice and a daughter Beatrice Florence and is buried at Kettering Cemetery, Northamptonshire.
