Private John INGLIS (1893-1917).

Service # 15547: Private, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 15th Reinforcements, New Zealand Expeditionary Forces (NZEF).

Born 24 December 1893 at Riwaka, Tasman District, Nelson Region, South Island, New Zealand.

Son of Thomas & Elizabeth Inglis of Toko, Taranaki District, North Island, New Zealand.

Prior to enlistment for war service John Inglis was a Butcher at Riwaka, Tasman District.

John Inglis enlisted for war service - on 15 April 1916 - at Trentham Military Training Camp, Wellington District, North Island, New Zealand.

At enlistment John Inglis was posted as a Private with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 15th Reinforcements, NZEF.

On 26 July 1916 Private Inglis left New Zealand for overseas war service - with the 15th Reinforcements NZEF - aboard HMNZT 59 "Waitemata" or T 60 "Ulimaroa" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.

Private Inglis disembarked, from his transport ship, at Devonport, England - on 3 October 1916.

On 20 October 1916 Private Inglis left England for - active war service in - France.

On 8 November 1916 Private Inglis joined his Battalion - the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion - in the field, at France.

On 20 March 1917 Private Inglis was admitted, sick, to hospital. On 9 April 1917 Private Inglis re-joined his unit - in the field, at France.

On 14 June 1917 Private John Inglis was killed in action - in the field - at Messines Ridge, Messines, Ypres, Belgium.

Private John Inglis is commemorated at Messines Ridge (New Zealand) Memorial, Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

Private John Inglis is also remembered at his hometown in New Zealand - on the Riwaka District War Memorial (1914-1918) - at Riwaka, Tasman District, South Island, New Zealand.
