On enlistment day Alfred Sherman was posted as a Private with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 12th (Nelson) Company. 4th Reinforcements, NZEF.
On 17 April 1915 Private Alfred Sherman left New Zealand - with the 4th Reinforcements NZEF - aboard either HMNZT 21 "Willochra" or T22 "Knight Templar" or T23 "Waitomo" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.
