Trooper John (Jack) HANNEN (1879-1915).

Service 2/206, Trooper Canterbury Mounted Rifles, Main Body NZEF.

Born 28 February 1879 at Tadmor, Nelson District, South Island, New Zealand.

Son of Hugh and Mrs E. Hannen of Tadmor, Nelson District.

Brother of Lance Corporal Steve Hannen (6/248), Canterbury Infantry Regiment - died of wounds 17 August 1918 - at Rouen, France.

Prior to enlistment for war service John Hannen was a Labourer at Tadmor, Nelson District.

John Hannen enlisted for war service - on 17 August 1914 - at Nelson, South Island, New Zealand.

At enlistment John Hannen was posted as a Trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, Main Body, NZEF.

On 16 October 1914 Trooper Hannen left New Zealand - for overseas war service - with the Main Body NZEF - aboard HMNZT 11 "Athenic" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.

On 3 December 1914 Trooper Hannen disembarked at Suez, Egypt.

Trooper John Hannen served at Gallipoli during 1915.

On the 6th or 7th of August 1915 Trooper John Hannen was killed in action - at Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Trooper John Hannen is commemorated on the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial, Chunuk Bair Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey (Ref: Panel 4).

Trooper John Hannen, and his brother Lance Corporal Steve Hannen, are both remembered at their hometown in New Zealand - on the Tapawera District War Memorial (1914-1918) - at Tapawera, Nelson District, South Island, New Zealand.
