Cecil Robert Tolcher is commemorated in Holy Ttrinity Church Galmpton. The History Group had difficulty finding him, however we now know that he was a man with local roots. His Grandparents were from Salcombe and all had well- known local names; His grandfather was Adams Hannaford Tolcher, a chief mate, and grandmother Elizabeth Hosking Lidstone. His father was Frederick William Tolcher b 1869 in Salcombe, a seaman, and his mother was Henrietta nee Dawson. He was born in Bristol in 1897 . His father died in 1901 and in 1902 his mother remarried Mr Morse. With his brothers and sisters Cecil then moved to live with his widowed grandmother in Salcombe, whilst Henrietta moved to Middlesex with her husband where she is described as a tobacconist . There were Tolchers in the adjoining parish of Malborough as well as Kingsbridge and Salcombe.
Cecil Robert Tolcher served as a Private in the 1st 9th Battalion of the London Regiment D Company. Hel died on 23 January 1917 aged 20 of wounds sustained in France. His pay and effects went to his mother Henrietta Morse.
Cecil can be traced as C Tolcher, but is commemorated in the local church as Cecil Tolcher Morse.
