William James Johnston worked in the Edinburgh Head Office of North British and Mercantile Insurance Company. He joined the office as an apprentice in 1905, served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Regiment 1st/4th Battalion and died at Gallipoli. His name is given as Johnston in his service records and on the company war memorial.
