Private Alfred Isaac Beard (40400 South Wales Borderers, formerly Bedfordshire Regiment) was killed on July 2nd, 1918 at Léalvillers, Somme, Picardie, France. He was 41 years old. Private Beard was present at the headquarters of the 10th Battalion, South Wales Borderers Regiment, located in a house at Léalvillers. The HQ was hit by several German artillery shells, killing 2 officers and 8 other ranks as well as wounding 2 officers and 8 other ranks. Before the war, Private Beard listed his occupation as Groom Gardener and worked for two veterinary surgeons in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. Private Beard's younger brother Arthur was killed just a few months earlier and Alfred left a wife and nine children.
