Reginald Walpole Ellwood worked in the Head Office of Norwich Union Fire. He entered the company's service in 1907, aged 17, and was a member of the Workmen's Compensation Claims Department.
He was a keen yachtsman and cricketer. Skilled in miniature rifle shooting, he was part of team which won the National Miniature Rifle Shooting Team Championships at Sheffield in 1914. He enlisted in August 1914 and served in Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line (incl. Yeomanry and Imperial Camel Corps).
He died at sea of wounds received in the Dardanelles while serving as a Corporal with the King's Own Regiment Norfolk Yeomanry 1st/1st Battalion. He was 25. The General Manager of Norwich Union wrote to his father: "Your son was a very popular member of our staff and his loss will be keenly felt."
