William Porteous worked for the Northern Assurance Company Ltd. He began working for the company in the Edinburgh Office in October 1905 and was transferred to the Liverpool branch as Accountant in May 1913. Before the war he served 4 years in the 4th Battalion of the Royal Scots (Queen's Edinburgh rifles) and at the outbreak of war he joined the 6th (Rifle) Battalion of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment as a corporal. He was slightly wounded while serving in France in April 1915 and recovered only to be killed in action near Mametz. He was described in the company's roll of honour as a "promising and devoted servant of the company." He was 27.
