Joseph Mather was my Great Grandad, a milliner living and working in Stockport - a true "hatter". He went to war in France and never came back. His grave remains in Corbie, Northern France. I can't begin to imagine what experiences he went through - and I would hazard that he had no idea what he was signing up to either, which must have made the experience even more terrifying. I know that my family struggled awfully to cope with the loss, both emotionally and financially - his job, whilst modest, would have brought in a liveable income for the family. How much would life have been different had he lived? Sadly, we will never know. I'm very proud of what he did, proud to call him my Great Grandad, and humbled by his actions. We will remember him.
