14/Northumberland Fusiliers were the Pioneer Battalion of the 21st Division. 21st Division were involved in the Battle of the Somme from the opening day. On 1 July 1916, the division attacked eastwards north of Fricourt but with little success. Over the next few days, the division inched eastwards before being removed from the line by 4 July. The division rejoined the line to consolidated the capture of Mametz Wood by 38th Division prior to the Dawn Attack on 14 July, at which time the division held the wood. By 15 July, 21st Division was holding Bazentin-le-Petit Wood until relieved that evening. Sometime during this period, Thomas Moore was wounded and evacuated to UK. He died at 1st Western Hospital, Fazackerley, Liverpool, on 23 July from a) Gun Shot Wound left thigh and b) Septicaemia. He was buried at South Shields.
