Lance Corporal Herbert FAUCHELLE (1878-1915).

Serial # 6/1839; Lance Corporal - Canterbury Infantry Regiment; New Zealand Expeditionary Forces (NZEF).

Born: 2 January 1878 at Takaka, Tasman District, South Island,  New Zealand.

Prior to enlistment for war service Herbert Fauchelle was a labourer at Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand.

Private Herbert Fauchelle embarked for overseas war service on 17 April 1915 - aboard either HMNZT "Willochra" or "Tofua" - from Port of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.

Private Fauchelle disembarked, from his transport ship, at Suez, Egypt.

Private Fauchelle was promoted to Lance Corporal.

Lance Corporal Fauchelle served at Dardanelles (Gallipoli), Turkey.

On 7 August 1915 Lance Corporal Herbert Fauchelle was wounded at Gallipoli, Turkey.  He was evacuated from Gallipoli, by hospital ship, and transported to the 17th General Hospital, at Alexandria, Egypt.

On 14 August 1915 Lance Corporal Herbert Fauchelle was listed as "Dangerously ill". On 23 August 1915 he was taken off the "Dangerously ill" list.

On 4 September 1915 Lance Corporal Herbert Fauchelle died of hs wounds - received at Gallipoli - at the 17th General Hospital, Alexandria. Egypt.

Lance Corporal Herbert Fauchelle is buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military & War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt (Ref: H.71).

Lance Corporal Herbert Fauchelle is also remembered at his hometown - on the Takaka District War Memorial (1914-1918) - at Takaka, Tasman District, South Island, New Zealand.
