According to unit orders Thomas was in the area of Mametz repairing taken ground when he was wounded on the 3rd July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He later died of his wounds the following day. It must have been hard news on his two sons still fighting in France, with one son in the same location continuing the advance on Mametz wood and another in a tunnelling company.
