Today as well as the memories of all those brave soldiers that sadly lost their lives at The Somme 100 years ago, my family have been thinking about my paternal great grandfather William James Kay (born 1889) who joined the King's Liverpool Regiment battalions 1 and 8 in 1914.
After some research today we now believe he amazingly was one of those that survived as a soldier in the Battle of the Somme, however sadly went on and lost his life on the 20th September 1917 at the Battle of the Salient, Belgium: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Passchendaele
Although my great grandfathers body was never found or brought back home, and he never even got to meet his very young baby daughter (my grandmother Muriel Kay), his name is listed on the Memorial at Tyncot Cemetery, Belgium, panels 31-34 and 162A, 162B. This is the only photo we have of him.
