Patrick McLeod Innes was born on 22 August 1897 in Cambridge, ENGLAND. He was the eldest son of Hugh McLeod Innes, bursar of Trinity College, Cambridge and my Grannie’s eldest brother.
Patrick attended Haileybury College, Hertfordshire and gained a scholarship to Trinity College at Cambridge in 1915. He wanted to become an architect, taking an interest in the newly developed Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire.
He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant taking part in the 111th Siege Battery, supporting the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917 and was killed in action on 30 April 1917. He is buried in the La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, FRANCE.
Patrick’s younger brother Donald was to join the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) in June 1918, never returning home as he died from wounds in October the same year.
My Grannie did not speak much of the 2 brothers she lost, but when she did she would remember them as young boys. Boys who were not allowed to ‘run on Sundays’ and at a young age, possibly about 5yrs old she would run in front of them knowing that they could not chase her.
