News has been received that Pte Alfred Stones, son of Mr R J Stones, and lately resident at Scrooby, has died in hospital subsequently to being severly wounded at the front at the early age of 20. Pte Stones enlisted in the 1st Sherwood Foresters early in September 1914 and within six months was en route for France after a short training at Whitley Bay. He received severe wounds in the head and eyes in the early stages of the great move now in progress being struck by fragments of a bursting shell. He was moved to the 13th Stationary hospital at Boulogne along with other serious cases and lingering a week before the end came. In civil life the deceased was employed in the new section of railway connecting to the Harworth Pit with the GNER main line at Scrooby. His family have sympathy with a large circle of friends in their great loss.
