James Henry Gulliford was born in Somerset and was the youngest son. His younger sister was my mother. She adored her brother and his death was an enormous tragedy to the whole family. His mother wrote in the family bible "My beloved son was killed today October 21st 1916." He had joined at 16 years and lied about his age. He was killed on a day when there was no official fighting! His body was never found, his name is recorded at Thiepval. I have visited the site and watched the poppies fluttering in the wind. They are just like the fields of Somerset where he grew up. Harry was mentioned by his General as a good soldier. We have the small card sent to his mother recording his bravery. Rest in peace Harry. We will never forget you.
