Joseph was born on the 13th of May 1891, the son of an Irish tailor. He married Florence May Paxton on the 1st of July 1912 and they had 3 children, Denis,Kathleen and Johanna. Joe was a post office worker in Wigmore St London. Together with fellow workers he joined the 1/9th Bn. London Rgt. Queen Victoria Rifles. He died on the Somme on Monday the 9th of October 1916, in Dewdrop Trench, Lesboeufs. Joe's body was never found - all that remained was the photo he carried with him of Florence and his two daughters. His name is displayed at Thiepval memorial, together with the fallen without graves. The photo was found on the battlefield and identified by a passer-by when displayed in a shop window in the Edgware Road.
