Private William Holland Retford Times 30 March 1917 Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs F Holland of number 1, Carr Road, Retford in the loss of their son, Pte Wm, Holland, 1st Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action on March 4th. Prior to the war the brave soldier was a moulder at Messrs Jenkins Engineering Works. He joined the Colours on September 7th 1914 and after undergoing a course of training at Whitby Bay, he went to France on May 16th 1915. He was 31 years of age and was attached to the Machine Gun Section. He had seen a lot of fighting and fell a victim to a sniper. His parents receivrd intimation of his death from a friend on March 1915 and the official notification from the War Office arrived on March 22nd. The deceased has two brothers serving, Pte J Holland with the Cheshire Regt and Pte F Holland with the South Wales Borderers.
