According to family, Joe Radford was a lodger to the Mountfords. They had fallen on hard times when the family firm, importing silks and tea from China, went out of business. They resorted to taking in lodgers and Joe was one of those. Despite the Mountfords previous prosperity, the match was not approved by the Radford family. When Joe was killed, there was no fiurther contact between the Radfords and my grandmother. She subsequently married my grandfather, James Duthie.
