B/19407 Private Harold Jackson, 26th (Service) Battalion (Bankers), Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment)

Harold Jackson was born during 1896 in Hillingborough, Sheffield, Yorkshire, the son of Arthur and Bertha Hannah Jackson.

On 31st March, 1901, Harold was living with his Parents and Sister Elsie, at 64 Dykes Hall Road, Sheffield.

On 2nd April, 1911, Harold was a Clerk for a Sheep Shear manufacturer. He was, living with his Parents and Sister Elsie and Brother Milnes, at 5 Moorland Terrace, Oughtibridge, near Sheffield, Yorkshire.

Following the outbreak of the Great War on 4th August, 1914, Harold, who was the Secretary of the Sheep Shear Society Ltd, Oughtibridge, enlisted in the British Army at Sheffield.
By May, 1916, B/19407 Private Harold Jackson was serving with the 26th (Service) Battalion (Bankers), Royal fusiliers (City of London Regiment) at Aldershot. His Battalion was part of the 124th Brigade, 41st Division.
He left Aldershot, with his Battalion on 4th May, 1916 and entrained at Farnborough bound for Southampton. The Battalion then boarded the SS Mona Queen and they landed at Harve, France, joining the British Expeditionary Force on 5th May, 1916.

Harold was killed in action, during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (15th – 22nd September, 1916) on 18th September, 1916.
His death was officially reported in the Daily Casualty list published on 6th November, 1916
Unfortunately, his grave was lost during later fighting and he was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing

Arthur and Bertha were sent a British War Medal; Victory Medal; a Memorial Scroll and a Memorial Plaque to commemorate Harold’s service during the Great War.
