My great grandfather Walter William Howes was born in Bristol in 1890. He was married to Lucy and had a son named Frederick, my grandfather, who was born in 1913.

He was killed fighting in the area of Sailly-Saillisel and his body was never recovered. He was originally commemerated on a Memorial Cross erected by the Battalion and placed on the battlefield. Walter and 37 others killed with him are now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

His brother, Frank also enlisted and served as a driver in France and Mesopotamia with the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery from Novemebr 1915. He was demobilised in May 1919
