I thought that the following could interest you – it relates to my maternal grand-father, John McLennan Hine. Born in 1872 into a Maryport family of shipowners, Jack Hine was a qualified marine engineer and at the age of 42 he decided to volunteer for service in the military (despite having a wife and 4 young children). He was commissioned in the Sherwood Foresters in 1914. In 1915 as the Admiralty needed engineers for the Navy, Jack Hine was transferred from the Sherwood Foresters and was commissioned as a Temporary Engineer-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, being appointed to HMS Invincible. He saw action in the South Atlantic but at the Battle of Jutland, 31st May 1916, ‘Invincible’ was sunk with the loss of almost all hands, there being only 6 survivors.
