Roy was killed on the advance up the hill from the landing site following an urgent request for help from those above. He had been made Sargeant on the way over to Galipoli and he responded and raced ahead. He was wounded in three places the last in the head, and this proved fatal in a few minutes. He was buried at the site and is remembered on the wall at Lone Pine. Roy was a fine footballer and represented Auckland- but for the war he may well have become an All Black.
