A Soldier's Example Tribute To A Burnley Lad

Mr and Mrs Holt  of 38 Canning Street Burnley have received  information of the death of their youngest, son      Pte Richard Holt of the 7th Batt, East Lancashire Regt, in action in France on 12/12/1915 Pte Richard Holt who was 23 years of age last September who was formerly in the invoice  office at Bank Top Station and enlisted on October 31st 1914 He was connected with the Stoneyholme Wesleyan Church and School. His bother Driver Samuel Holt is serving with East Lancashire Artillery.

The news of his death was conveyed in a letter from a chum who says Pte Holt was hit by shell  in the traverse just when he was ready to leave the trenches for a. relief party to come in.  Another Burnley Soldier was wounded at the same time, The comrade conveys the sympathy of the platoon and pays a warm tribute to the soldierly  qualities of his friend,  He says I hope you will bear your loss bravely in the knowledge that your son died bravely and left behind him an example of cheerfulness  unselfishness and devotion to duty that will live  as long as there is man  left in our Platoon 

On Wednesday the parents received  the official notification from the record office Preston stating that he was killed in Action on December 12 in France
