A tribute to Pte 266811, Reginald Smith, 1/7th Bn King's  Liverpool Regt. KIA, France 28/6/1916

                 Behind The Inscription
“Granddad”, it's strange for us now old and grey,
to think of you, young man, that way.
Just 25, no chance to seize the day.

Called to arms, you joined the fight
against the fearsome German might.
You'd ne'er be home by Christmas Night.

One hundred years ago today,
you died in battle and where you lay
your body remains beneath the clay.

Your postcards home could not reflect
the horrors endured and their effect
on your young soul; may your spirit reject.

The world forgot for many a year
and that is why today we're here,
so you will know we hold you dear.

Yes, we know of your gallantry.
The daytime raid on the enemy.
Left where you fell in the French country.

Your brother, Joe, was also lost.
Just 21, dear God, the cost!
Mere names on war memorials embossed.

Your sweet wife Amy, a short life too,
Just 34 when she followed you.
So little joy and memories too few.

But you bequeathed the finest treasure,
your daughter Margaret, it was our pleasure
to be her children, loved beyond measure.

Thank you for the gift of life.
For all that you did sacrifice
no words could thoroughly suffice.

Your memory lives on in our family.
The fight you fought so we'd be free
will be remembered in perpetuity.

It is our hope, before we die,
that you are found where you now lie.
Our vow to you - we will be nigh.
