Private Henry Cottrell, my mothers Great Uncle, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty; after extracting a shell that had misfired from his trench mortar and throwing it over the parapet, where it then immediately exploded - he undoubtedly saved the lives of his gun crew.
