James Sydney Chandler lived at 136 Grangewood St, East Ham. He worked for the Post Office and Captained there Football team and was one of the original Boy Scouts.
He joined up at the Essex Regiment Depot at Portway, Stratford at the outbreak of war having lied about his age.
He was sent to Thetford for basic training and was billeted in Cambridge, where according to family legend he shot a hole in the ceiling whist cleaning his rifle.
After being shipped to France, Jim was transferred to the 7th Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, for the september attack on the Quadrangle. During the attack Jim was injured by german small arms fire and taken to a dug out for shelter. However, before he could be taken to an aid station the dug out was hit by german artillery, his body was never recovered.
