Henry Walter Rake was born on the 22nd February 1883 to Walter and Ada Rake in Hackney, London. His father was a wood engraver and by 1891 they had moved north to Salford, Manchester. In 1909 he married Florrie Higson, and was working as a travelling photographer. He joined up for service in 1914 and was a gunner in C battery, 155th brigade Royal Field Artillery. He died of wounds on the 29th May 1918, and is buried at Bagneux British Cemetary, Gezaincourt, France
