ARTHUR GEORGE TOWNSEND was serving as a Rifleman with 1/8th (City of London) Battalion (Post Office Rifles)London Regiment when he was killed in action, during the 100 days offensive, on 31st August 1918. He was aged 28 and is buried in Hem Farm Cemetery in the Somme Region. 

He was the son of  George and Rose  Townsend of Albion Street, Chipping Norton. He had previously been working as a hairdresser's assistant for his Uncle in Knutsford, Cheshire. His younger brother Horace won the Distinguished Conduct Medal whilst serving with the 39th Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps in 1918, as Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He had previously served with The Royal Flying Corps and left a widow Margaret.
